HOW BEST TO PREPARE FOR YOUR PADI INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE
Your preparation is the ultimate key to a successful, enjoyable and to getting the most out of your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) in Perhentian Island, Malaysia. Following these few easy steps will ensure you are not missing anything.
1. Make sure you meet the prerequisites
To start your PADI PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), you must be:
Dive Leader certification — PADI Divemaster or leadership-level certification with a recognized recreational diver training organization* who is either: an instructor member in good standing, or a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of rescue diving certification; 60 logged dives; documented experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation.
18 years old
Medical clearance attesting to dive fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months.
Certified diver for six months.
EFR Primary and Secondary Care course completion (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.
If not a PADI Divemaster, complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.
Submit documentation of qualifying certifications for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level, as necessary.

If you are crossing over from another training agency, please provide photocopies of all your diver and leadership level certification cards or certificates.
Medical Statement signed and dated by a physician stating that you are physically fit for diving, valid within the last 12 months -

Logbook documenting more than 60 logged dives to attend your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), and 100 logged dives to attend your PADI Instructor Examinations (IE).
Please transfer your PADI membership to PADI Asia Pacific Office, in Sydney, Australia as soon as possible if you are planning to work as a PADI Scuba Instructor after your PADI IDC and PADI Instructor Examinations (IE) with us in Perhentian Island, Malaysia. This will speed up the processing of your PADI IDC paperwork and you will get your Teaching Status sooner!
3. PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) training materials
Get your PADI IDC training materials as early as possible. If you are not able to get from where you are, we can arrange for the PADI IDC training materials to be shipped directly to you. RDP Table and Instruction booklet
eRDPML and Instruction booklet
PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving (new version with blue cover)
PADI Diving Knowledge Workbook

Please remember to download a copy of the new 2010 PADI Instructor manual from your PADI Pro Site. It is totally FREE! If you do not have your own laptop for you to use during your PADI IDC, please print them out.

4. Your Diving Equipment
You do not want your PADI IDC to be interrupted by having improper or broken equipment. Be sure that all your scuba equipment is in good working condition. On top of your standard scuba diving equipment, you must also have:
Dive knife
Underwater compass
Underwater timing device or Dive computer
Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (SMB or Safety Sausage)
Whistle or Dive alert
Underwater signalling device
Have adequate exposure protection for water temperature between 28 and 30 degree Celsius

5. Plan to join us in our "Extended" 4-day PADI IDC preparatory program - it's FREE!
Prior to your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) program, we offer a 4-day complimentary PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) preparatory program. This valuable program is designed to help you refresh your dive theory and sharpen your demonstration quality and rescue skills. This is a great way to prepare yourself for the upcoming PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) program and get you into the learning mode.
This program also gives you the opportunity to meet with other fellow candidates, your PADI Course Director and PADI IDC Staff Instructor even before your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) begins. You will also have the chance to familiarize yourself to our Instructor training center and the local diving environment.
6. Dive theory (Physics, Physiology, RDP, Equipment and Skills & Environment)
The 60 questions dive theory exam in the PADI Instructor Examinations (IE) is based on what you have learnt during your PADI Divemaster course, there is no surprise and there is nothing new. What you need to do is just to review them again to make sure that you are not forgetting anything. Please follow the steps below - do this early, don't until the last minutes, you do not want to be worrying about your dive theory knowledge during your PADI IDC.....
Practice answering questions using PADI Diving Knowledge Workbook
Review dive theory using PADI Divemaster section in your PADI Instructor Manual
Review details using PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving – if needed
Answer all dive theory questions of the PADI Divemaster final exam A and B at least two times
Be very familiar with using the new eRDPML and Table – especially in finding minimum surface interval time
Ask other PADI Instructors if you need assistance
During the 4-day PADI IDC Prep, we will do a lot of practice exams to help you fine-tune your dive theory knowledge.
If you think it has been a while since you did your PADI Divemaster course and your Dive Theory knowledge is "a bit more than rusty" - it is a good idea to sign up for the PADI Dive Theory Online. It is a great tools to help you through with your Dive Theory knowledge!
7. Demonstration quality skills for PADI Open Watr Diver and PADI Continuing Education courses
Naturally as a PADI Scuba Instructor your demonstration quality skills must be up to standard so that it will be easy for your student divers to copy and learn. Whenever you have the chance, please practice all the skills from the PADI Open Water Diver course. We will also review demonstration techniques for teaching skills from PADI Adventures in Diving programs as well as PADI Rescue Diver course. Remember to practice performing it correctly, slowly and to exaggerate your movements to show details of skills. Whenever possible, assist an Instructor conducting PADI courses as many times as you can!
8. PADI System, Standards and Procedures
Understanding the PADI System and Standards is one of the major parts of your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC).

Go through all the important key standards from the PADI Instructor Manual.
Do not try to memorize every single PADI Standards in the Instructor manual, it is impossible! Instead, be familiar with your manual so that you know where to find them.
