PADI Assistant Instructor Course Overview

PADI Assistant Instructor Course is the first portion of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). This course is designed for PADI Divemasters (or any qualifying certification from another training organizations) who would like to expand their knowledge, skills and duties as a more valuable instructional assistant and assume limited teaching responsibilities. It’s a great way to gain experience in order to become a PADI Scuba Instructor!

Not only it provides a valuable preparation towards PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course, it also expands skills that enhance a PADI Assistant Instructor’s professional capacity.

During the program, you’ll gain additional experience while continuing to learn the PADI System of Diver Education. Throughout this 5-day course, you will be introduced to teaching techniques to conduct meaningful knowledge development sessions, confined water training and open water training dives.

After you have successfully completed your PADI Assistant Instructor Course (on top of what you can conduct as a PADI Divemaster), you will be able to:

• Conduct Knowledge Development portion of PADI diver courses under direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
• Independently conduct Discover Scuba Diving program
• Independently conduct and certify PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver course
• Independently conduct and certify PADI Digital Underwater Photography, PADI Equipment Specialist, PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Diver courses after you have attended those particular PADI Specialty Instructor training courses

PADI Assistant Instructor Course adds to your abilities as a dive professional, while giving you the necessary tools to complete the entire PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) by attending your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course.

PADI Assistant Instructor Structure and Performance Requirements

During this course you will need to successfully complete all the requirements below:

1. Complete 16 independent study knowledge reviews in the Instructor Candidate Workbook.
2. Participate in 6 PADI Instructor Development Course curriculum presentations by PADI IDC Staff Instructor and/or PADI Course Director.
3. Give at least 2 Confined water teaching presentations and score at least 3.4 on at least one presentation.
4. Give at least 2 Knowledge development (micro-teaching) presentations and score at least 3.5 on at least one presentation.
5. Conduct at least 2 open water skills presentation in 1 dive and score at least 3.5 on at least one presentation.
6. Successfully complete the PADI System, Standards and Procedures written examination with a minimum score of 75%.
7. Successfully complete a skill circuit evaluation (20 basic scuba skills) with minimum score of 3.0 on each skill.

Successfully completing this course qualifies you to continue to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Course.

To enroll in the PADI Assistant Instructor Program you will need to meet all the prerequisites listed below:

1. Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recreational diver training organization. An individual with leadership level certification with another diver training organization can be:
• An instructor member in good standing with one of the following organizations: BSAC (Club Instructor or higher), CMAS (two or three star), FAUI, IDEA, Los Angeles County, MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA (Instructor Grade 2 or higher) or YMCA (others may qualify – contact PADI for verification).
• Or, a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of rescue diving certification (contact us for more information).
2. Be at least 18 years old.
3. Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving. The physician signing the form may not be the applicant.
4. Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water scuba dives (as documented in the individual’s log book) and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving.
5. Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.
6. Submit documentation of any equivalent certification for entry-level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization (PADI Members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit.)
7. If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.
