PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course Overview
This is the rest of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), the final development step in your quest to become a PADI Instructor! Here, we focus on further developing your abilities beyond just a Scuba Instructor but as a professional diving educator.
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course is designed for PADI Assistant Instructors who would like complete their PADI Instructor Development Course prior to attending their PADI Instructor Examinations (IE) and become certified as a PADI Instructor. This course also welcomes Scuba Instructors from another training organizations to have a look at the entire PADI System of Diver Education.
This rating sets you apart from the crowd. As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI), you may conduct the entire range of PADI courses and programs – from PADI Discover Scuba Diving program through PADI Divemaster Course.

PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Program Structure and Performance Requirements
- Complete 16 Independent Study knowledge reviews in the Instructor Candidate Workbook.
- Participate in 13 PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) curriculum presentations by PADI IDC Staff Instructor and/or PADI Course Director.
- Give at least 2 Confined water teaching presentations and score at least 3.4 on at least one presentation.
- Give at least 2 Knowledge development (prescriptive-teaching) presentations and score at least 3.5 on at least one presentation.
- Conduct at least 2 open water skills presentation in 1 dive and score at least 3.5 on at least one presentation.
- Participate in PADI Adventures in Diving program workshop.
- Participate in PADI Rescue Diver course workshop.
- Successfully complete 5 parts dive-theory (Physics, Physiology, Equipment, RDP and Skills & Environment) written examinations with minimum score of 75% on each part.
- Successfully complete a skill circuit evaluation (20 basic scuba skills) with minimum score of 3.0 on each skill.
- Complete 800m continuous swim with mask, snorkel and fins.
Successfully completing this program qualifies you to attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE).

To enroll in the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course you must:
- Be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) or as a current instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organization including BSAC (Club Instructor or higher), CMAS (two or three star), FAUI, IDEA, Los Angeles County, MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA (Instructor Grade 2 or higher) or YMCA (other may qualify, please contact Azman for more information).
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within 12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving. The physician signing the form may not be the applicant.
- Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water scuba dives and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving. To attend an PADI IE, you must have at least 100 logged dives.
- Submit proof of CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months.
- Submit documentation of any equivalent certification for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI Member who has these records on file does not need to resubmit).
